The Folger Shakespeare Library Gala
Celebrating a Theatrical Life
The Folger Shakespeare Library Gala, “Celebrating a Theatrical Life, David Garrick
(1717-1779),” honored the greatest actor of his day, a playwright, impresario and
advocate of Shakespeare’s claim to the title of National Poet of Britain. Inspired by
the library’s collection of Garrick materials, Folger Director Gail Kern Paster and gala
chairman C. Boyden Gray organized the festivities under the honorary patronage
of British Ambassador Sir David Manning and Lady Manning. After viewing the
Garrick exhibit (on view through August 28) during cocktails in the Great Hall, guests
watched a scene from “The Clandestine Marriage,” a comedy written by Garrick
and George Colman that had a month-long run in the library’s Elizabethan Theatre.
Guests included Mary and Eric Weinmann, Evelyn Stefansson Nef, Marcia McGee
Carter, Marc and Jacqueline Leland, Ann and William Nitze, Kuwaiti Ambassador
Salem al-Sabah and his wife, Rima, and Vicki and Roger Sant.
