Opinion Journalists: Serving What Master?
The winners of THE WEEK magazine’s Opinion Awards were honored at the fi rst
annual forum hosted by the magazine in conjunction with the Aspen Institute at the
Mellon Auditorium on March 8. The dinner drew a crowd of almost 200, including
congressional leaders, journalists and professional political pros. Peter Beinert of
The New Republic was named columnist of the year; Tom Toles of The Washington
Post was recognized as editorial cartoonist of the year; the Los Angeles Time’s
Jonathan Turley was named Advocate of the year for his writing on civil liberties
and the war on terrorism; and PowerLine was recognized as blogger of the year.
A panel of 25 judges selected the winners from fi nalists chosen by senior editors at
THE WEEK. The evening also featured a panel moderated by THE WEEK’s editorat-
large, Harry Evans, titled “Is the Media Elite out of touch with America?” with
panelists Tina Brown, Pat Robertson, Margaret Carlson and Ed Schultz. The WEEK
also presented an opinion forum at the Freer Gallery that featured two panels, titled“Opinion Journalist: Serving What Master?” and “The War in Iraq: Patriotism, and
the Making of Public Opinion.”
