The Washington National Opera’s Midwinter Gala
The Imperial City of Fez
Over 500 opera patrons and supporters experienced the exotic charms of
Morocco at the Washington National Opera’s Midwinter gala on February
26, hosted by Moroccan Ambassador Aziz Mekouar and his wife, Maria
Felice. The Mellon Auditorium was transformed into the Imperial City of Fez
for the evening, with a souk, decorative palm trees, colorful tents and a reenactment
of a Moroccan wedding with a henna-painted bride carried in
on a platform to the beat of drums and tambourines. Delectable Moroccan
cuisine by Occasions caterers preceded an auction of trips to Morocco and
various ports in the Mediterranean. The event raised $250,000 to support
the Washington National Opera Center for Education and Training.
