Heart Disease: Not Just a Risk for Men
Sister to Sister: Everyone Has a Heart Foundation, Inc. held a breakfast at
Neiman Marcus on January 27 for female diplomats and diplomats’ wives to
launch an International Heart Health Awareness Campaign to raise awareness
that heart disease is a leading killer of women globally. Guests were counseled
about the risks, signs and symptoms of heart disease by Dr. Celia Maxwell,
director of the Women’s Health Institute at Howard University Hospital and then
screened for heart disease risk factors by Howard University Hospital medical
professionals. Major risk factors include high blood pressure, high blood
cholesterol, physical inactivity, and smoking.
The campaign is co-chaired by Rima Al-Sabah, wife of Kuwait’s ambassador to
the U.S., and Lady Manning, wife of the British ambassador. Members of their
Steering Committee include ambassadors’ wives from Brazil, Canada, Qatar,
Portugal, Hungary, the Netherlands, Colombia and Russia.
