PEN/Faulkner Awards
Beginnings
Ron Carlson, Jennifer Egan, Colin Harrison, Jim Lehrer, Colum McCann, Azar
Nafisi, Joyce Carol Oates, ZZ Packer, Grace Paley, Ann Patchett, Caryl Phillips,
Porter Shreve, Monique Truong and Daniel Wallace lent their imagination to the
theme “Beginnings” at a gala benefit evening of readings to celebrate PEN/
Faulkner’s 25th anniversary at the Folger Shakespeare Library on September
27. Evoked from Eudora Welty’s “One Writer’s Beginnings,” this year’s theme
revealed that beginnings can come about at any stage in life. Roger Mudd
served as Master of Ceremonies at the performance, which was followed by
a black-tie dinner in the Great Hall. Proceeds from the evening go to fund the
PEN/Faulkner Foundation’s outreach programs, the Writers in Schools program
and the PEN/Faulkner Awards.
