Washington’s Grand Idea

Yet another summer book party-- this one took place at David Michaelis and Clara Bingham’s Georgetown home on June 10 to celebrate the publication of Joel Achenbach’s latest book “The Grand Idea: George Washington’s Potomac and the Race to the West.” The book reveals the first president’s magnificent dream for the Potomac River to become a major commercial thoroughfare of the United States. The book has been praised for its insight into the mind of Washington. Achenbach is the author of five other books and is also a columnist for The Washington Post and National Geographic magazine.
