| Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington recently hosted its annual black-tie gala for over1300 guests, honoring the Year 2000 Society and recipients of the 1999 Caritas Awards. Master ofceremonies Paul Berry bestowed the honor of the Caritas award on Raymond and Rose LaPlaca, Dr. Thomas E.Curtin, and Marguerite Simpson, as outstanding leaders in community service, advocacy, and empowerment.This year’s theme, “A New Century of Caring” focused on the good works of all Catholic Charity staff,volunteers, and supporters. Guests were treated to an evening of fine dining and dancing to Doc Scantlinand His Imperial Palms Orchestra, which kept the dance floor lively with Big Band and swing music.
