Pollywood: SXSW Days 5 & 6 – Tech to Music

Films, music, sunshine, margaritas and taco stands; a few of the reasons we returned to Texas for the 2010 South by Southwest festival.

Day 5

"Harry Brown," starring Michael Caine.

Today was an unfortunate day in Austin for two reasons. 1) It rained and 2) I became a lone soldier when my fellow comrade, Tara Kumar, returned to Washington, DC. Luckily for me, I met the Greggs, a nice Austin family who agreed to take me in and teach me how to experience South by Southwest like a true Texan.

On the last day of the technology portion of the event, I sat down with Peter Corbett, CEO of iStrategy Labs who led the panel, “Wonky and Geeky DC.” Peter explained that applications providing place and time, a “life map,” are all the rage with this year’s South by Southwest interactive gurus.

I ventured over to the Paramount for a showing of “Harry Brown,” a film produced by “Kick Ass” director, Matthew Vaughn. In the movie, Michael Caine is Harry Brown, an ex-marine trying to solve the problem of violence on the streets of modern day Britain. Director Daniel Barber used vivid images of violence and drugs which made this movie hard to watch, in a good way.

Anticipating the next day’s opening of the music portion of the festival, I went back to my new temporary home and snuggled with the family dog.

Day 6

Waking up to homemade pancakes and eggs is not a bad way to start the day. I am seriously considering moving back in with my parents after this trip. As the technology gurus vacate Austin and musicians move in there are a few notable changes, such as less talk of Twitter and an increase of flannel shirts. It is also more difficult to decide on a day plan given that there are so many talented acts to see and only one me.

This year, the first day of the music portion of South by Southwest collides with St. Patrick’s Day, a dream for anyone who likes to party. In celebration of the Irish, I began my day at the Guinness party where Broken Records, a seven-man band from Scotland, stole my heart and left me questioning the legality of having seven husbands. Their unique sounds are created with too many instruments to keep count. Even the lead singer, Jamie Sutherland, doesn’t know exactly how many are used and says that they have to minimize the amount because it is becoming a “pain in the…”  After watching the Broken Records, my expectations for the rest of the day were set to a really high bar.

The slowly moving line to see Neon Indian at Red 7 was definitely worth the wait. A few technical problems did not stop this Texas band from proving why they are a crowd favorite, keeping everyone dancing, smiling, and wanting more.

Worried that I was not getting enough of the free food and drinks that everyone brags about, I joined the Canadians for the Canadian Blast party where I made up for lost time. Unfortunately, I had to sit through a few unmemorable bands as punishment, but the BBQ made it worth my while.

I kept hearing talk of a local Austin band called Balmorhea, so I went to the Central Presbyterian Church, where they were playing, to check out the scene. Their music is undeniably beautiful and the church was the perfect venue for this instrumental band whose acoustics were complimented perfectly by the high ceilings.

The Walkmen played at Stubb’s and although I was really far away from the stage, I was close enough to know that they were just as good as I dreamed they would be. This New York band sounds the same live as they do recorded but a live performance provided the extra bonus of seeing their upbeat personalities and great sense of style.

After a long day of venturing from one venue to the next, I joined my friends at Baby Blue Studios, home to local Austin band Sunset. We sat around the fire and ate tacos from a truck while local Texas bands serenaded the night away.

2010 The Young and The Guest List

Washington Life’s guide to the capital’s most influential under 40 residents in 2010

Our annual Young & The Guest List feature is known for containing the names of accomplished, dynamic, and successful Washingtonians, all under 40 and devoted to making the nation’s capital a place that attracts (and keeps) the best and the brightest. This fifth annual compilation is no exception. During the past year, myriad political and economic events have made waves far beyond the Beltway and more than a few of our players have gotten bigger headlines than seasoned veterans. Our president, after all, is only eight years past the eligibility cutoff to have been listed himself. Many of his young staff included here, have quickly become fixtures in the White House and halls of Congress, to say nothing of the social scene. We have numerous “change makers” from the government, along with major players in the arts and sciences, journalism and business as well as the non-profit and philanthropic sectors. In the spirit of the famous Irish proverb, “praise youth and it will prosper,” we share with you 250-plus men and women who dare to dream big and act even bigger.

Innovation, sharing, convergence and technology have become a rallying cry for more than NOVA start-ups and Gov 2.0 Summit types – they’ve become populous ingredients of a macro prescription to fix what ails our economy. They are ideals espoused by the current administration, conservatives and liberals alike.

Washington Has a Secret: We Have Artists!

Washington is a city about secrets. Everyone has one. Well, we are letting one of them out of the bag – We are the District of Creativity

Washington secrets aren’t just hidden in the delete boxes of Hill staffers. They are right in front of you each day: the artist whose opening you passed while heading to dinner; the interior designer who selected the oh-so- hip light glowing above the table; the cast of the performance you have tickets for tonight; the writer of the review that got you to buy the tickets in the first place; and the event planner who is putting together the party after the show.

DUPONT VALLEY: Meet Peter Corbett (@corbett3000) founder of iStrategyLabs (ISL) . “Follow” him and you’ll find he is known for co-creating D.C.’s Apps for Democracy and co-founding Government 2.0 Club, Government 2.0 Camp, and Transparency Camp. Recently NASDAQ OMX hired ISL to launch its first global social media marketing campaign and the Army tapped them to create a contest encouraging military technologists to build new web and mobile apps. Somehow he still finds time to Tweet like 20 times a day.

Diplomacy 2.0

Connecting to a global audience one tweet at a time.

By Mark Drapeau

Diplomacy2.0
Tero Ojanperä
wants to rule the world. Well, perhaps the September cover of geeky Fast Company magazine goes a little too far with that pronouncement. But despite all the media buzz about Apple’s iPhone and the fact that nearly everyone in Washington has a Blackberry attached to their thumbs, those two devices combined account for only three percent of the global phone market. Nokia, on the other hand – the company that Tero Ojanperä  is the Executive Vice President of Entertainment and Communities for – owns nearly 40%. If he who controls the medium controls the message, Nokia might very well control the future of mobile text, video, music, and other things you want to have on-the-go. And this in turn may affect international diplomacy.

But such global ambitions do not happen without good public relations and influencer outreach. Fast Company describes Ojanperä as a Warhol-meets-Bond-villain businessman wooing music industry executives at a fashionable Tribeca hotel. But this kind of public-outreach-meets-global-domination is certainly not unique to corporations. In fact, governments and empires havehad the lead on that score for centuries as they fight for and strive to maintain influence in the world, and Finland is no exception. Thanks to a new “sister city” marriage of Washington and Helsinki, a program called Invitation to Helsinki brought some District influencers to meet counterparts and exchange knowledge. With backing from Finland’s U.S. Ambassador, this brainchild of the Finnish Embassy’s cultural counselor Pekka Hako blossomed into a collection of relationships that may last far beyond the week-long trip that people like Government 2.0 Club co-founder Peter Corbett, Georgetown student body president Patrick Dowd, and political communications expert Blake Zeff took.

Global Diplomacy Materializes From Decentralized Social Media

By Mark Drapeau

In his best-selling book The World is Flat, Thomas Friedman notes fundamental changes at the intersection of emerging technology and human behavior that have enabled massive 21st century globalization. Among them are collaborative Web technologies, the ability to discover an abundance of information, and personal digital devices like iPods and BlackBerries. The surfacing of such inventions has led to changes not only in running businesses, but also in organizing movements. As billions saw last year, a relatively untried junior senator from Illinois rose to become the leader of the free world. But in a flat world, you don’t need to be a senator to lead a tribe, and you don’t need to be powerful to become a household name.

The floral arrangements might have been smaller and the grandiose decor designed to be not so grandiose, but, still, as the saying goes, it’s what’s on the inside that makes the outside beautiful. With femme forces such as First Lady Michelle Obama (who made a surprise appearance), Patti LaBelle, K.D. Lang, Annie Leibovitz, Midori, Chita Rivera, and, yes, Paris Hilton, the Kennedy Center was a beautiful place to be Sunday night.

Michael Kaiser had a hard act to follow after last year’s salute to conductor John Williams, which brought out Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. But, this year’s women, especially conductor JoAnn Falletta (who masterfully command of the National Symphony Orchestra) made 2008 a distant memory.

In a city filled with some of the nation’s most dynamic young people, the 250 individuals who comprise this year’s Young & The Guest List repeatedly stand out; as leaders, risk-takers, givers, connectors, and changemakers. Their achievements vary widely, but each was nominated, researched, and debated before being added to the list. What emerged from this process is a more accomplished group than ever before, and so for the first time, we’ve decided to include their professional titles alongside their names. The past three months have reminded us all how quickly the city’s young power players can change. But after four years, The Young & The Guest List is still the only place to find them all.
