Drew Chafetz may live in his parent’s basement and hang out with his laptop at Tryst, but it would be a big mistake to call him a slacker. One of a new generation of socially responsible young overachievers trying to make a real difference in the world, Chafetz, 26, a former Maret School (shown above) and University of Colorado/Boulder soccer player, is the heart, soul, and shoe leather behind Love.fútbol’s efforts to build soccer fields for children in impoverished Latin American communities.

WL SPONSORED - Photos by James R. Brantley

GLORIOUS CULTURE REBORN: Warriors, monks, dancers, singers, and musicians filled the Opera House stage for a three-hour extravaganza raising consciousness about Chinese culture and spirituality. CELEBRATING AFTERWARDS: Event sponsor Stephen Norris pronounced the show “colorful, thought-provoking, and controversial” at the post-performance reception where he and his wife Pia-Maria greeted cast members and guests who included violinist Joshua Bell, Tommy Quinn, Nini Ferguson, Gratian M. Yatsevitch III, Marlene Malek, Bill Gertz, and Wyatt Dickerson.

Buffy Cafritz and Ann Jordan’s Party

Location : The Fairfax at Embassy Row

WL EXCLUSIVE EVENTPhotos by James R. Brantley

There was more schmoozing than ever at the capital’s longest-running private Inaugural fête, with hosts Buffy and Bill Cafritz and Vernon and Ann Jordan (assisted by Kelly and Robert Day and Phyllis George) upping the glitz ante with Obama insiders Tim Geithner, Valerie Jarrett, Larry Summers and Desirée Rogers, among others of note. Even the senators and governors were duly impressed – especially when the entourages of Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bill Clinton deftly coalesced near the receiving line.

MAGIC MOMENT: The former prez pontificating about “the new Democratic paradigm” (or some such) past midnight with Chris Buckley, Vernon Jordan and Bob Woodward.

Jockey Club Reopens

Buffy and Bill Cafritz

Location: Fairfax Embassy Row Hotel

WL EXCLUSIVE –
Photos by James R. Brantley

WELCOME HOME: “We missed it when it was gone, but now its back,” said Vernon Jordan, waxing rhapsodic about a long-missed haunt as he, his wife, Ann, and co-hosts Bill and Buffy Cafritz welcomed guests to dinner at the Jockey Club. Re-opened after 10 years with a chef poached from New York’s 21, “The Jockey” is back with soft lighting, the old red-and-white-checked tablecloths, and all the social set’s fattening favorites: crab cakes, puff potatoes, Dover sole, rack of lamb, and dessert soufflés.

THE GANG’S ALL THERE: Polly Kraft, Ben Bradlee, George and Liz Stevens, Molly Raiser, James Billington, Debbie Dingell, and Gahl Burt.

THE EVENT: A buffet supper honoring young School of American Ballet dancers on the eve of their opening night performance at the Kennedy Center. THE SCENE: The buzz ratcheted up when the gorgeous troupe made its entrance into the Tobins’ glorious Kalorama home. “Beautiful art, beautiful food, a beautiful garden and now this …,” one guest marveled as an exquisite ballerina quintet posed for pictures at the bottom of the staircase in the front hall. No wonder several balletomanes-in-the-making ordered tickets on their cell phones right then and there. THE GUESTS: Duane Hampton, Lucky Roosevelt, Mary Weinmann, Aniko Gaal Schott, Phil and Nina Pillsbury, Henry von Eichel and veteran ABC correspondent Ann Compton, who regaled guests with tales from the Hillary Clinton campaign trail before reminiscing about the Reagans with former Nancy Reagan aide Jim Rosebush.

Who’s Next: Reihan Salam and Ross Douthat

Reihan Salam and Ross Douthat

The recent publication of their bestselling book, Grand New Party: How Republicans Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream, proved that these co-authors are two of the brightest young stars in the Republican firmament. Both write at The Atlantic, and Salam appears on MSNBC’s Race for the White House, while Douthat has a widely read blog at Atlantic.com. Expect to see a lot more of these two regardless of the outcome in November.
