Being cozy and chic involves playing up the luster of patent leather, the hauteur of fur, or the cheekiness of crimson accessories. It’s all in the details and this fall, details are in!

Model Kathy Leutner is no stranger to Washington. Raised in Chantilly, Va., about half an hour outside the city, Leutner would often come to the capital with her family to shop, visit museums, and enjoy the cherry blossoms each spring. She began modeling after she was discovered by a talent agent while shopping at Tysons Galleria at age 18, but modeling soon took a backseat to education when she enrolled at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. During her last semester, she commuted between JMU and New York City, where she was frequently booked in commercial, editorial, and bridal shoots. Recently, she was featured as the face of Self magazine’s 2009 “Self Beauty Awards.” Leutner is now a full-time model based out of New York with Click Model Management. When she’s not travelling for work, she spends her time volunteering at the SPCA and the Lazarus Foundation.

FASHION FORWARD: Created by the Style & Image Network, this year’s Fashion Fights Poverty event featured ethical and eco-friendly designs from Kayce Armstrong, Annatarian, Eric Finn, Mae Ho, and Adele Weschler. The event raised $10K for Nest — a group dedicated to providing micro-financing loans to women in developing countries to begin or maintain art- or craft- based businesses. WORKING IT: FFP gets better each year and is a great addition to the local fashion scene, but it ran a long and the quality of the fashion, although eco-friendly, was hit and miss. Highlights included Armstrong’s collection, Will Thomas doing a yeoman’s job of keeping co-host Parker Posey in check, and rocking hair and make-up direction by James Cornwell.

The Beatles went to India; I’m trying to do it in the District – and so can you. From art exhibits to film competitions, DJ classes to fashion shows, unleash your inner artist.
By Michael M. Clements
My first stop on the journey to artistic bliss takes me to Phillipa Hughes and Mike Weber’s SALON CONTRA. These invite-only are-you-in-the-know get-togethers attract a cross section of the city’s creative set. After glasses of wine and small talk, the “Contrarians” circle up and tell each other about their creative paths so participants know whom to synergize with later. It was there where I met interior designer Rouzita Vahhabaghai, who, along with sister, and business partner, Bita Vahhabaghai and Yiselle Santos, organize the equally collaborative and arty PECHA KUCHA NIGHT (PKN) series.
The lovely “ita” sisters invited me to present during PKN Vol. 3 at the Czech Embassy. The series began in Japan (Pecha Kucha is Japanese slang for small talk) and involves getting six to ten creative types to discuss their craft as 20 images of their work flash by in 20-second increments on a large screen behind them. I happily indulged in speaking about my painting. So can you – find out more at www.pechakucha.org.

This fall the talk for men is “patterns.” While mixing patterns can be fun and fashionable – it can also be dangerous. You want to avoid mixing too much: plaid pants, a striped shirt and a herringbone tie will have you looking like a clown. However stripes on stripes with complementary colors, windowpane patterns in reverse image of one another, and plaid with bold colors, or dare I say it, paisley, are all fashionable with a bit of an edge. To finish off your look: hair is retro inspired this season. A side part and slicked back look, or sweeping back with a little height, will add a sense of class and style. The suit might make the man, but the way you wear it certainly makes the suit.

This fall, designers replaced the traditional neutral autumn palette with one that is both exotic and inviting. Take cues from the sizzling culinary arts, and this season’s selection will engage your senses, and wake up your wardrobe! Don’t forget to pair your look with a delicious dish from a local restaurant. Beauty for autumn is sexy. Hair is not overly structured, keep it natural. It doesn’t matter if you are serving up curls or straight hair, it is all about shape. Makeup up is clean and dewy. Just toss on some peachy blush, extra mascara, stain your lips, and you are sure to be delicious!

What works for jaunts to the Hamptons is all wrong for Paris. Pack light, bright and neutral for tropical trysts and stick to black, gray and a shot of white for urban escapes. The must-haves? Oversized sunglasses, a great watch, a hat for protection, a light-weight trench-coat for layering, flats and a coordinated carry-on. Gucci and LV are classic travel luggage but this summer’s stylish travel comes in white-textured leather or canvas.
