Heavyweight Philanthropy at Fight Night

Fight Night celebrates its 20th anniversary with plenty of boxing legends, donations, Marines, cigars, eye-candy, and the inspirational Joe E. Robert, Jr.

Forget for a moment the wafting clouds of cigar smoke, flowing Ravenswood Cabernet Sauvignon, juicy NY Strip steaks, curvaceous table hostesses and Redskins cheerleaders, live music by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, boxing legend after boxing legend and, well, the overall downright manliness of Fight Night. Forget it all and remember this: for 20 years Fight Night has been raising millions of dollars ($2.8 million last year and over $2.2 million this year) for Fight For Children and other organizations that provide education and healthcare services to low-income children in Washington, D.C.

Hollywood on the Potomac: Bricks and Proverbs

“Twin City” mayors, global opportunities for women, and dinner with the “Nanny”

By Janet Donovan

Cory Booker, Adrian Fenty

Cory Booker, Adrian Fenty

Separated at Birth
The only thing separating Newark, N.J. Mayor Cory Booker and our own Mayor Adrian Fenty is 198 miles, “as the crow flies.” They share not only a passion for their respective cities, but bear an uncanny physical resemblance: tall, lean, and follicly challenged. It’s no surprise they are often mistaken for one another, and that was the case when they both appeared at a screening of Brick City, a five-part miniseries that premiered on the Sundance Channel on Sept. 21.
While the series is about the fight to eliminate crime, poverty, and corruption in Newark, Booker realizes such problems are endemic to all inner cities. “It is a kind of a sharing of spirit that helps us through difficult times,” he said, “especially in this economy when we have challenges and appreciate having other brothers and sisters that are in the process.”
Executive producer Forest Whitaker came to express his deep commitment to the project (as did directors Mark Benjamin and Marc Levin). The Oscar-winning actor is so far removed from Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, whom he portrayed in The Last King of Scotland, that some guests wondered if he had actually shown up. The confusion was caused by his having trimmed down to half the size he was when he played the role.

Chinese Proverbs
“I got a letter from Harvard the other day, something I’ve always wanted,” Tammy Haddad joked, adding that it was about her women’s rights work, not an invitation for a fellowship. That was before she introduced her guests of honor, dual-Pulitzer-Prize-winning New York Times columnist Nick Kristof and his wife, Sheryl WuDunn, at a party celebrating the couple’s recent book, Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide.
The title refers to a Chinese proverb roughly translated as, “Talking about a problem is half the solution; doing something about it is the other half.”
Love those Chinese proverbs. They link to everything in life. Take for example when Kristof said that basically we’re all messengers, but the messenger also has to get the message. Proverb: “To talk much and get nowhere is the same as climbing a tree to catch a fish.”
Women’s Global Issues Ambassador Melanne Verveer got into proverb mode as well when she noted the need for women to realize their potential. Proverb: “Raise your sail one foot and you get ten feet of wind.”
Enjoying the buffet, bar, and comfy settees on the lawn were Mike McCurry, Ann Dickerson, John Coale, Juleanna Glover, Anita McBride, Elsa Walsh. and Mike Allen. Proverb: “Enjoy yourself. It’s later than you think.”

The Real Anna Wintour …
She’s been called everything from merely ruthless to the anti-Christ – although Nostradamus would have challenged the latter. If you saw The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep, which was supposedly laced with nasty vignettes about Vogue’s legendary editor-in-chief, you might tend to agree with the portrayal. However, it would be worth the effort to reconsider by seeing the recently released September Issue, a compelling look into the everyday life of a talented, hardworking woman who drives the fashion industry and is, yes, also a piece of work.
If you made it to the Gilt Group’s after-party at the W Hotel, you saw enough Manolo, Prada, Dior, and Chanel to convice anyone that Washington is no longer “Hollywood for ugly people.”

The Goody Bag
Guests at a dinner in honor of Fran Drescher at Teatro Goldoni were the first to get a sample of one of her new FranBrand products. And no, it wasn’t a decongestant nasal spray. Coming out in November, the former “Nanny’s”organic skin care products will be sold on the Home Shopping Network with a portion of the proceeds going to her Cancer Schmancer charity. “We are good for the planet and good for the soul.”
In the bag: a lip balm that tasted so good, most of the guests passed on dessert.

RING RING: Fight For Children’s annual School Night bash rocked the gym – or more specifically, the Ronald Reagan Building – with an all-star musical line-up that included Naturally 7, Sheila E and the E Family Project, and Wyclef Jean. The night celebrated excellence in District schools. HIGH MARKS: Emcee and board member Patti Austin showed her vocal talents by sitting in with Wyclef Jean on a few tunes while the city’s leading educators and school board members loosened up and got down on a Friday (not a school night). ROLL CALL: Mayor Adrian and Michelle Fenty, Tony Williams, Katherine Bradley, Keith Wade, and Joe Robert.

Big changes are always in store when a new president takes office. The “out-with-the-old, in-with-the-new” transition of power is even more historic when a change of party occurs (check) and especially when a two-term presidency ends (double check). Barack and Michelle Obama are also younger than their predecessors (they were born at the end of the Baby Boom era; the Bushes at its very beginning), and, most relevant of all, are the first African-Americans to occupy the White House.

Kate Marie Grinold, Adrian Loving, Lindsay Czarniak, Michael Dove, Dominique Dawes and Francis Hoang represent a few of the many successful locals on the list.

In a city filled with some of the nation’s most dynamic young people, the 250 individuals who comprise this year’s Young & The Guest List repeatedly stand out; as leaders, risk-takers, givers, connectors, and changemakers. Their achievements vary widely, but each was nominated, researched, and debated before being added to the list. What emerged from this process is a more accomplished group than ever before, and so for the first time, we’ve decided to include their professional titles alongside their names. The past three months have reminded us all how quickly the city’s young power players can change. But after four years, The Young & The Guest List is still the only place to find them all.

SUNDAY SCENE: Bold-faced names from the political, social, media and diplomatic elite predominated at the evening reception hosted by Kuwaiti Ambassador Salem Al-Sabah and his wife Rima, including Mayor Adrian Fenty and his wife Michelle, Donald Graham, Ken and Jackie Duberstein and Leo and Grega Daly. Those hoping to see new faces weren’t disappointed when Obama insiders Peter Orszag and Gen. James Jones were sighted.

The Obamasphere: Political Allies

harry-reidHARRY REID
The Senate majority leader developed a reputation for sparring with President Bush and Senate Republicans after he assumed the party’s leadership in 2005. As a member of the Obama’s own party, this former Nevada gaming commissioner and convert to Mormonism is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the president’s legislative agenda.

patrick-kennedyPATRICK KENNEDY
The youngest member of the Kennedy clan to currently hold elected office joined his father, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and his cousin, Caroline Kennedy, in endorsing Obama during a rally at American University in early 2008. The Rhode Island congressman has championed health care legislation, particularly mental health.

adrian-fentyADRIAN FENTY
Washington’s popular young mayor supported Obama in the primary and was at his side campaigning in the District, even lunching with him at the venerable diner, Ben’s Chili Bowl. Like the president, Fenty is a “BlackBerry” aficionado, known for carrying three of the devices at all times, one of which connects him directly to D.C. police chief Cathy Lanier.

george-millerGEORGE MILLER
After more than 30 years in the House, Miller has earned a reputation as an expert in education issues and a champion of U.S. humanitarian efforts. In early 2007, he became one of the first members of Congress, as well as one of the first super-delegates, to endorse Obama over Hillary Clinton, despite his constituents’ majority support for Clinton.

nancy-pelosiNANCY PELOSI
Many believe the Speaker’s tacit support for Obama over Clinton in the Democratic presidential primary was a crucial vote of confidence for the young senator. Since assuming leadership of the 110th Congress, Pelosi has shown grit and political talent, but her legislative agenda appears be more progressive than the President’s.

manhead7BILL RICHARDSON
Despite withdrawing his candidacy for the top job at the commerce department after questions arose about an unrelated matter, the New Mexico governor remains a Democratic Party heavyweight, and his breadth of experience will still be useful to the Obama administration, albeit in an unofficial capacity.

bill-clintonBILL CLINTON
Although no official position has been handed to the 42nd president, he hopes to be a “helpful sounding board” for Hillary as she takes on the job of secretary of state. Since leaving the White House, Clinton continues to comment on contemporary politics throughout the world, and assisted the political campaigns of both his wife and the president.

al-goreAL GORE
The former VP and environmental champion kept a low profile during the campaign—though he enthusiastically endorsed Obama in June—focusing his attention on his Alliance for Climate Protection. The Nobel Peace Prize recipient is also co-founder and chair of Generation Investment Management and Current TV.

dickdurbinDICK DURBIN
This senior senator from Illinois has been called Obama’s political ‘godfather’, a reference to his unwavering support and encouragement. Currently majority whip, Durbin is credited with launching an online petition in ’06 to encourage Obama to run for president, the same year Time named him as one of  “10 Best Senators.”

harold-fordHAROLD FORD
The former Tennessee congressman and Blue Dog Democrat led the relatively conservative Democratic Leadership Council, and appeared as a frequent political commentator. Ford remained neutral through much of the primary campaign, before ultimately backing Obama. Expect another Senate run.

kathleen-sebeliusKATHLEEN SEBELIUS
One of the country’s most popular governors, this Kansan  reduced debt without raising taxes, endorsed Obama early, and proved that conservative  states can be successfuly led by Democratic governors. A rising star in the party, speculation abounds as to her political aspirations.

williammdaleyWILLIAM DALEY
Along with his brother, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, this former secretary of commerce and Democratic Party elder leads an influential Illinois-based political dynasty, which backed Obama from day one. Rumored to have gubernatorial ambitions for 2010, Daley can count on the support of his six elder siblings.

caroline-kennedyCAROLINE KENNEDY
JFK’s daughter endorsed a non-family member for the first time ever in her New York Times Op-Ed, “A President Like My Father,” and helped secure the endorsement of her uncle, Sen. Ted Kennedy, for Obama. Caroline Kennedy appears ready to make her own political waves in the new administration, while adjusting well to higher levels of media scrutiny.

john-kerryJOHN KERRY
The newly re-elected senator and early Obama supporter is in line to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where global warming will reportedly be a top priority under his leadership. After false speculation that Kerry would join the Cabinet, the Mass. legislator will preside over Sen. Clinton’s confirmation hearings this spring.

patrick_murphyPATRICK MURPHY
This moderate Pennsylvania Democrat is currently the only Iraq war vet in Congress, where his criticism of Bush’s policies helped break the taboo against questioning an administration at war. The Bronze Star recipient was also an early Obama supporter, and his endorsement challenged a perception that vets would gravitate towards  fellow veteran John McCain.

timkaineTIM KAINE
Virginia’s governor was instrumental in shifting his state from red to purple on the political map, and was one of Obama’s key southern allies from day one. Initially considered for vice president, some say the president initially preferred Kaine, until advisors warned him against running with a relative newcomer.

patrick_devalDEVAL PATRICK
The first African-American governor of Massachusetts shares deep ideological bonds with the president, so much so that they’ve acknowledged sharing speech lines. Adding to the synergy is the fact that they’ve also run successful campaigns under the guidance of campaign manager David Axelrod.

claire-mccaskillCLAIRE MCCASKILL
Floated as a potential running mate during the campaign, the freshman senator from Missouri endorsed Obama while most of her female colleagues were backing Hillary Clinton. As an informal advisor, she helped him pull in the women’s vote, and advised him to campaign in rural, conservative areas.

jennifer-granholmJENNIFER GRANHOLM
Michigan’s governor helped to ultimately deliver the state for Obama by supporting him early on, when the majority of her constituents backed Hillary Clinton. Proving that “being Sarah Palin” wasn’t just the work of Tina Fey, Governor Granholm played the role of the Alaskan VP candidate during Joe Biden’s practice debates.

richard-lugarRICHARD LUGAR
One of Obama’s biggest and earliest foreign policy supporters (when the then-candidate didn’t have very many), Lugar is the seniormost Republican senator in the 111th Congress, following the retirement of Pete Domenici and the defeat of Ted Stevens.

mark-warnerMARK WARNER
The former Virginia governor endorsed Obama early while running for office himself in Virginia, and was, for a time, considered a veep contender. Going forward, Senator Warner will be an important southern ally from the newly minted purple state.

jon-corzineJON CORZINE
This former Goldman Sachs chairman and current New Jersey governor worked to pass legislation against corporate malfeasance during his years in the Senate by  agressively pursuing executives of  Enron, Tyco, and WorldCom after their companies failed.

pritzkerPENNY PRITZKER
A member of one of America’s wealthiest families, the founder and current chair of Classic Residence by Hyatt served as national finance chair of Obama’s presidential campaign. Pritzker has donated nearly half a million dollars to political campaigns and PACs since 2000, and wields broad power in Democratic political circles.

jack-reedJACK REED
The former paratrooper and senior senator from Rhode Island’s name was floated as a possible running mate for Obama. In 2002, he was one of 22 Senate Democrats who voted against the use of force in Iraq and he traveled to the Middle East with Obama in 2008.

DARLING DAUGHTER: The 10th anniversary celebration of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School would have passed unnoticed under most circumstances. Having Jenna Bush (a former third-grade teacher there) and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty as guests of honor guaranteed a hefty donor base plus a thank-you dinner hosted by Kuwaiti Ambassador Salem Al-Sabah and his wife, Rima, that attracted not only Ms. Bush’s mother, First Lady Laura Bush, but her new husband, Henry Hager, as well.

PROGRAM NOTES: A heartfelt tribute for the famously low-profile First Daughter by her slightly elder twin, Barbara Bush, and another for Mayor Fenty by D.C. Schools’ sizzlin’ Chancellor Michelle Rhee were followed by a performance by the Compassionates, White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten’s band, with Dede McClure and Meryl Chertoff providing vocal accompaniment.

The 2008 Social List

The 13th annual record of notably social personalities from the worlds of politics, diplomacy, business, philanthropy, and the arts.

By Kevin Chaffee

John Pyles and Barbara Harrison

John Pyles and Barbara Harrison

This roster is neither the first, nor will it (inevitably) be the last to single out certain individuals, who, by virtue of birth, rank, wealth or accomplishment, take part in the social life of the nation’s capital. Estimable precursors – drumroll here – include The Green Book,” so-called for its faux green suede cover, which has appeared continuously since 1930; and the Blue Book of Washington, D.C., which ceased publication around 1990 after a century in print. The Social Register, sometimes called the “Black Book,” also contains the names of numerous prominent local figures, many hailing from so-called “blue blood” families, although it merged its thin Washington volume into a much larger 12-city national version back in the 1980s.

A major difference separating Washington Life’s list from the others – apart from having no discernible color – is that we do not publish a “phone book” containing addresses and contact information, much less schools attended, club memberships and yacht listings. Ours is merely an alphabetical nomenclature of people who make a difference by adding immeasurably to their city, and by extension, their country and the world. Another point of contrast is size. Compared to the many thousands of entries contained in other directories past and present, WL’s Social List, currently about 700 names and counting, is relatively small. We do not see the need to include every member of the Congress, Cabinet or Court (i.e., Supreme), much less all those with top jobs listed in the “Plum Book” of political appointments.

The Jamaican women of Washington unite to prevent obesity

By Michelle Fenty

Photos by Tony Powell

Location: The Four Seasons Hotel
Adrian and I were honored once again this year to serve as honorary co-chairs of the sixth annual Jamaican Women of Washington, Inc. (JWoW) Tea-Off to Good Health. JWoW is a charitable organization that raises funds to improve the health and well-being of underserved women and children in Jamaica and Washington, D.C.
My family roots can be found in both the District and Jamaica, and as a board member of JWoW, I am grateful to have the opportunity to make a significant impact on important health and social issues in both regions. This year’s theme, “Obesity Prevention: Promoting Wellness and Healthy Lifestyles,” is a relevant one, because obesity has reached endemic proportions in the District and in many other parts of the world, including Jamaica. Of particular concern to us is the impact the epidemic is having on women and children in both regions. Led by its founder, Dr. Jacqui Watson, president of Health Concepts International, JWoW has raised over $500,000 since its inception, and donated to several deserving organizations in Washington and Jamaica.
My husband, Mayor Adrian Fenty, recognizes that obesity is a critical public health issue and his administration is working tirelessly to effectively address it on a number of levels. Adrian holds himself to high personal fitness standards and serves as an excellent role model for Washingtonians, but all of us need to become personally involved and take the necessary steps to live healthier lifestyles.

District residents would never let Rock Creek Park be turned into a soccer stadium with a seven million square-foot mixed business and residential development … So, why is it about to happen on the Anacostia?

By Bob Nixon

In Anacostia National Park on the Eastern Bank of the Anacostia River, spring is in bloom. Frogs croak mating calls across tidal wetlands while rare birds including the Willow Flycatcher line their nests and visitors walk and fish along the riverbank. Downtown, in a parallel universe, highly skilled architects draft plans to convert all but 70 acres of historic Poplar Point into seven million square feet of commercial cash cow.

How can this be? Anacostia National Park was designed 106 years ago by the McMillan Commission and Fredric Law Olmstead Jr. as a five-mile-long “Emerald Necklace” along the river. The commission noted this new park was “to correspond with Rock Creek Park in the west” and further commented, “Whatever of natural beauty is to be preserved and whatever park spaces are still to be acquired must be provided for during the next few years or it will be forever lost”

The citizens who fought for the creation of the park are long dead and forgotten and those who use it today apparently don’t count. In 2006, Congress passed a lobbyist-written law to undo Olmstead’s visionary work of 1902 and allow for massive development on the Riverbank. One champion is Councilmember Marion Barry, who wants a soccer stadium, stores and condos to replace the park. Recently the Fenty Administration’s Office of Economic Development picked Clark Realty as the winners of a park development competition.

How, on this warming Earth, in a national capital talking about becoming the greenest city in America, can we even speak of cutting the natural heart out of Anacostia National Park? Shouldn’t we be celebrating and investing in our park with its 1,200 acres and its five miles of riverfront? Why are we not making it the true Central Park and emerald necklace its creators envisioned? As always, the answer is money.

Nothing is as profitable as turning nature into cash – if you can get a permit. We have heard the justification countless times. Anacostia National Park is underutilized, neglected and contaminated. Development will provide jobs and amenities for local residents. This equals tax revenue-money.

Only in the poorest ward of our city, crying for basic resources, would such a plan ever see the light of day. For decades Anacostia National Park has suffered from federal abandonment and neglect that would have brought winning lawsuits if the same had happened in Rock Creek Park. The tale of two cities lives on, as Georgetowners will soon celebrate their huge victory in the reopening of Potomac Riverfront Park.

On January 20, 2007, over 500 Ward Eight residents attended a public meeting at Ballou Senior High School on the future of Poplar Point. Though the community has had little enthusiasm for a soccer stadium and other alternatives had been discussed, the soccer stadium proposal was suddenly the only one being considered. Many were shocked and betrayed by this behind-closed-doors decision to take a publicly owned resource away from them.

“I walk [Poplar Point] every morning,” said resident Lawrence Lacey, “Why is it that every time a developer sees a green space in Southeast, they think it has to be developed? It’s probably one of the only green spaces left for us to appreciate the waterfront.”

“For most of the residents, we certainly won’t be able to live there, and I can just imagine that access to the park area will be severely restricted,” added Charles Wilson, another concerned SE resident.

Sadly, this is not the first time that the communities along the Anacostia River have faced such a proposal for their parkland. In the 1940s, a large chunk of Anacostia Park was liquidated to construct the coal-burning power plant on Benning Road that has brought asthma and emphysema to the community. In the 1960s, developers carved off more park to build RFK Stadium. In the 1990s, Kingman and Heritage Islands were decommissioned by Congress for a Mayor Barry-supported amusement park that took years to beat back. Next, Congress authorized a plan to give the Corrections Corporation of America the right to build a prison on the National Park at Oxen Cove.

The winning Clark Realty brochure is stunning in both its development scale and Orwellian level of spin. The company uses Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth movie poster and the cover of Time Magazine’s “Global Warming Survival Guide” to bless the proposed conversion of the public common into private real estate. The brochure explains that the development will be named the “International Environmental Center” and will be “a One Planet Community” that “will transform Poplar Point into a global research and employment center for environment and alternative energy.”

Let’s not pretend that green roofs and green names will negate the tremendous environmental impacts of this proposed development. The legislation that allowed transfer of the land from the Federal government to the District requires that at least 70 acres of land be kept for “park purposes,” but commercial development is certainly not a requirement of the Secretary of the Interior. A better idea would be for the Mayor to propose, and City Council to vote for, simply cleaning up Poplar Point as a first step in generating commercial development on the vacant land outside the Park boundary.

To visualize this option, the Earth Conservation Corps engaged renowned landscape architects Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates to draw a restored park in line with the historic Olmsted plan to show that three million square feet of commercial development can be built on the vacant commercial land that now borders the parkland. Yes, we can have it both ways and at a vastly reduced cost to the environment, our spirits and our wallets.

Like the previous amusement park and prison schemes, carving up Poplar Point will require City Council approval. It will also cost District taxpayers $200 million to fund “infrastructure costs.” Polishing the tarnished emerald that is Poplar Point National Park could start with the $2.1 million the Department of Interior has set aside for the purpose. It will also take courage and leadership. One can only hope a hero will stand up and fight for our jewel necklace – Mayor Fenty … Chairman Gray … Secretary Kempthorne … Council members … Citizens? … Anyone?

THE EVENT: A perennial favorite among Washington society figures, this year’s Phillips Gala was “Bal des Canotiers,” the Boater’s Ball, and the decadent French theme was on display in every gallery of the museum. The evening also served as an informal going-away party for museum Director Jay Gates, who will retire this year. Gates oversaw a five year, 30,000-foot expansion of the Phillips, including the construction of a garden and an auditorium. THE SCENE: Lobster and veal were served at tables topped with five foot-tall topiaries. Dessert and dancing were held at the Anderson House. THE GUESTS: Justice Alito and Martha Ann Alito, Mayor Adrian Fenty and Michelle Fenty, Linda Douglass, and Sidney and Rep. Jane Harman, David and Katherine Bradley, and Dan and Rhoda Glickman.

It’s hard to elicit a physical response from a Washington crowd; that is, to “turn” a head. Although we’ve produced this list for several years, 2008’s A-list has seemingly evolved into a roster of national names rather than one merely dedicated to the stars in our local firmament; after all, 2008’s elections have brought some bonafide rock stars to town. All eyes have been on Ben Bernanke to solve our financial woes, and we’ve all been waiting with baited breath to find out whether Christopher Hitchens will finally quit smoking (maybe it would help if he had God on his side). We said goodbye to longtime favorites Joe Gibbs, as well as beloved British Ambassador Sir Manning and his wife, Lady Catherine. While farewells are always sad, they make way for new faces such as financial heavyweight David Rubenstein and Secretary of Treasury Henry Paulson. Over the years, we’ve found that A-list status is less about the job and rank than one might think; it’s about having a personality that electrifies the room. We’re happy they’re here.

The 2008 Young & The Guest List

WL’s highly anticipated list of those we consider are the future leaders of Washington.

Since its debut two years ago, the release of The Young & The Guest List annually creates quite a buzz. The issue sells out in three-days, we receive lengthy nomination letters and last year, several tried to crash our party. We become just as excited about this issue, because it seems this is the only time the spotlight is brightly shined on the under forty set whose formidable accomplishments including best-selling books, multi-million dollar companies, congressional seats and mayorships sometimes go without their deserved fanfare.

Each year, we sit down with a committee to compile a list of 150 members who significantly contribute to the vibrancy of city. More often their names are unknown: are sometimes overshadowed by their boss (these range from the President to financial heavyweight David Rubenstein), perhaps they rarely go out because their writing groundbreaking State policy on Africa or maybe they are helping to securing an election for their candidate. Make no doubt though, these are the future faces of Washington, who behind the scenes are an integral part of making this country work. Listees range from the president of the Corcoran 1869 Society to our very own Mayor and his wife, to award-winning filmmakers and authors. For the third time, we present The Young & The Guest List.
