National Symphony Orchestra Opening Season Gala
Sounds of Sweet Music

The National Symphony celebrated its opening season and director Leonard Slatkin’s 60th birthday with a performance, dinner and dancing at the Kennedy Center on September 26. Performers saluting Slatkin included violinist Joshua Bell, conductor and violinist Itzhak Perlman, pianists Marvin Hamlisch and Joseph Kalichstein. This year’s ball, chaired by Vicki and Roger Sant, attracted 1,000 patrons, diplomats and business and government leaders. At $1,000 per person, the fete grossed over $1.7 million for orchestra activities.
