Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre
Gala
Revelations and World Class Dancing
Guests who braved the snow and ice to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance
Theater at the Kennedy Center in late January were not disappointed. World
class dancing fusing different styles and genres made for an interesting
and inspiring performance. Afterwards, guests attended a benefit gala and
dinner.
Proceeds benefited the company’s outreach and educational activities.
Legendary choreographer Alvin Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre
in 1958. Ailey’s productions incorporated a mix of ballet and modern
dance with a wide range of music, including classical, jazz and contemporary,
therefore appealing to a very diverse audience. When he passed away in
1989, the reins were handed over to artistic director Judith Jamison, a
Kennedy Center Honors
recipient in 1999 and an Emmy-winning choreographer. The company tours
worldwide and only visits Washington once a year, so plan ahead and be
sure not to
miss next year’s performance.
