Washington Life’s 2010 Fashion Awards

Washington Life’s 2010 Fashion Awards

We salute 35 men and women who bring that je ne sais quoi to the ballrooms and boardrooms of Washington.

By Karin Tanabe

“Welcome to Washington, Hollywood for ugly people!” As Washingtonians, we know that the cringe-worthy moniker, while catchy for outsiders, has never applied to the inhabitants of our city. But during the era of Lady Bird yellow, Jimmy Carter casuals, Hillary Clinton headbands, and George W. Bush suits and cowboy boots, it sometimes rang true for our wardrobes. Then all of a sudden our stylish first lady Michelle Obama and her fashion conscious cabinet came to town and Washingtonians weren’t accused of dressing out of the “take me” bin anymore. The world turned their attention to FLOTUS and her love of labels from Azzedine Alaïa, to Isaac Mizrahi, and even shopping mall staple J. Crew.

But those of us who have lived in the city for years know that we weren’t so badly buttoned-up before the Obamas came to town. After all, some Washingtonians have quietly been making fashion splashes for decades, but have simply gone unsung. It’s been since the Reagan era that the fashion spotlight thought to drift below the Mason-Dixon line. Until now.

Come inauguration day 2009 and our city hit the pages of Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Town & Country, not for our politics, scandals, or political scandals, but for the things we dare to wear, and wear well. Our city’s first lady, Michelle Fenty, helped raise the style bar when her husband was elected in 2006. Young, modern, and at times decidedly daring with her wardrobe, you’re more likely to see Fenty in a bandage dress than a Talbots suit. And then came the other Michelle. Americans had a lot to say about her bare legs and flat shoes, her 1950’s inspired skirts, those twinsets and bubblegum pearls. Every outfit she wears makes the blogs and inspires hurrahs from New York fashion royalty. Yes, when those at the helm dress well, the rest of us are inclined to follow.

But of course, in Washington, we like to blaze our own trails. Lobbyist Heather Podesta will happily wear blue tights to a black tie function without batting an eyelash. And why not? Fashion rules were made to be broken, if they are broken well. Just think of Desirée Rogers wearing Commes des Garçons to the now infamous state dinner that ultimately led to her resignation; Rep. Jane Harman looking more Logan Circle than buttoned-up Capitol Hill; and of course, Michelle Obama flashing her bare arms.

Will the style makers in New York continue to pay attention to us after the Obama administration is no longer? It’s hard to say. But for now, this is a chance to herald those who stepped out of the pantsuit and black dress haze of Washington fashion and into something that’s bringing the capital closer and closer to the cutting edge. Are we going to see punk chic, street style, or mini-miniskirts on Capitol Hill anytime soon? Probably not. But that’s just not the nature of our city. We continue in the footsteps of style’s power houses: Deeda Blair, Bunny Mellon, the late Evangeline Bruce and Clare Booth Luce, Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan. Add to them the new crop of D.C. socialites who have sprouted up in recent years and proved well up to the task of keeping Washington out of fashion Siberia, and the city’s come a long way baby. Here is to our first ever fashion awards, bestowed upon the 35 eople we salute for keeping the navy blue pinstripes away and daring to bring a little more flair to a city whose closets just got a lot more interesting.

Fashionable Life: New York Fashion Week Recap

Fashionable Life: New York Fashion Week Recap

While DC has long been considered a fashion backwater by the standards of New York’s 7th Avenue crowd, this year D.C. style setters turned New York’s vaunted Fashion Week on its head, connecting with the Fall 2010 Collections and showing a level of fashion forward consciousness that would keep even Anna Wintour listening.

The glittery tents of Bryant Park have been the official home of  New York City Fashion Week since 1993.  This September, Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center will become Fashion Week headquarters.  Perhaps having grown weary of the frenzy around the tents and the space Fashion Week took up, the Bryant Park Corporation decided to stop hosting the lavish display after this February’s show.

Once the move is made, the massive white tents will move up 7th Avenue to host the fashion shows on the Upper West Side, commencing this September with the Spring 2011 Collections.

Fashionable Life: Did Pink Jams Rock?

Just as D.C. Fashion Week draws to a close, the city’s hipster fashion pack crammed into the Longview Gallery for a Betsey Johnson runway show to benefit Pink Jams, a D.C. based breast cancer awareness charity.

As Angie Goff and Kirk McEwan introduced 14 local designers who showcased original pink creations to be auctioned off for Pink Jams, the Baltimore-based band, Charm City Devils jumped into one of their signature rock tunes. Rock and fashion have always gone together. But this night, some just seemed out of tune.

Fashionable Life: Ready for District Sample Sale?

The District Sample Sale, deemed a “fashionable charitable event,” will feature over 20 of Washington’s premiere clothing and shoe boutiques, all selling their items at stylishly slashed prices, with savings up to 90%. The event will feature cocktails and hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants, as well as a silent auction and a raffle.

A turnout of over 700 shoppers is expected. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.districtsamplesale.com. General Admission is $40, VIP tickets are $100, and Benefactress sponsor tickets are $250. Benefactress and VIP guests will be allowed private access to the sale from 5:30-6:30 for an extra hour of shopping.

“The VIP tickets are a hot commodity,” says Liberty Jones, one of the five District Sample Sale founders. “The ability to shop without the crowds get first crack at the sale, and get the paperless goodies bag make the ticket price a bargain.”

Participating boutiques include Caramel, Poppy & Stella, Sassanova, Urban Chic, Wink, and more. All the profits from the sale will benefit CityDance Early Arts, a program that provides arts education to underprivileged communities around DC.

Fashion show/cocktail parties at department stores don’t generally draw the same high-end crowds they did back in the 1980’s when the concept was new, but that certainly wasn’t the case on Nov. 13 when Bloomingdale’s sponsored a “Runway En Releve Redux” extravaganza to raise funds for the Washington Ballet. It was the first major Women’s Committee of The Washington Ballet’s fundraiser, with 10% of sales from all purchases from November 13th to 14th going to the Washington Ballet.

Fashionable Life: “Project Runway” Stars’ Cinderella Story

Fashionable Life: “Project Runway” Stars’ Cinderella Story

The Cinderella Foundation’s “Fashion with a Purpose” gave guests a look at four former “Project Runway” designers and their post-reality show collections.

By Allison Ghegan and Ashley Woodfolk

Washington’s most fashionable philanthropists gathered for an afternoon of purpose at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel and to get a close look at the runway shows of four “Project Runway” designers. Zulema Griffin, Ra’mon Lawrence, Korto Momolu, and Jerell Scott displayed their post-reality television collections unique to their individual aesthetic and design, wowing the audience with both women’s and men’s RTW, cocktail dresses, and formal attire. The Bravo network introduced fashion guru’s and reality show buff’s to talented and innovative designers like Momolu and Scott in 2008, and since then it has been evident that all four designers can only continue to improve, edit and in the words of Tim Gunn, “make it work” in the fashion industry.

Paying it Forward with Vital Voices in Kenya

Paying it Forward with Vital Voices in Kenya

My friend Nicole and I traveled to Nairobi at the end of September to help with the socio-economic development of tribal women from all different African countries.

We were there with Vital Voices, a DC-based, non-partisan organization that invests in women who are creating economic opportunities, advancing political reform, and safeguarding human rights.

This group is the real deal; their network even helps kidnap girls out of brothels in Cambodia. I was invited as a trainer, based on years as a professional jewelry designer for Saks Fifth Avenue, to help teach the women how to make their artisan products more appealing to a western audience, with the goal of helping them create products for export. Their products ranged from mohair and ostrich feather shawls and elaborate peyote stitch necklaces to bags made out of recycled straws and jewelry made out of paper.

Guests filled out surveys from Modelina.com to receive their own “style classification” and got the opportunity to meet with a celebrity stylist to pick out a new outfit from stores at Westfield Montgomery.

The guest of honor, “Project Runway” winner Christian Siriano, offered makeover and style advice to the several hundred shoppers in attendance, and dished on his new book, Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self, which is out this month.

“The September Issue” After-Party at the W Hotel

“The September Issue” After-Party at the W Hotel

Washington’s fashionistas get a slice of the Big Apple at the premiere of “The September Issue”

It may have been the doggiest of the dog days of August but that didn’t prevent local glitterati from turning out for the Washington premiere of “The September Issue” Wednesday night. ?

Invitation e-mails were sent only a few weeks ago for the much-anticipated event hosted by the online shopping website Gilt.com at the Landmark E Street Cinema, which was filled to capacity to see Vogue editrix-in-chief Anna Wintour in action as she forged the famed September 2007 issue of her magazine from scratch over a sixth month period. Why famed, you may ask? Answer: the 800-plus-page issue was the largest in Vogue’s history and the cause of much celebration in those pre-recessionary times. ??

Guests enjoyed the behind-the-scenes action as Wintour and her staff forge ahead to final deadline, arguing over photo spreads, dismissing carloads of expensive designer duds as “simply not for us,” tossing out $50,000 fashion shoots, and making snide comments behind each other’s backs. Much to everyone’s surprise, the real star of the show wasn’t Wintour at all, but the magazine’s longtime creative director, Grace Coddington, a fabulously frowsy redhead in her late 60s who couldn’t care less how she looks in a mirror or anywhere else. The flamboyant Andre Leon Talley also captures a few scenes, all of which he plays for laughs. My personal favorite: the obese Talley futilely trying to lose weight on a tennis court as a hunky instructor lobs balls his way. Biggest surprise: the total non-role played by European Editor-at-Large Hamish Bowles, who never gets a single word on camera.??

The W Hotel is Washington’s new oasis of chic, and the 200 or so guests who showed up for the post-screening party must be commenced for their effort to replicate the height of New York chic (mile-high heels, short skin-tight dresses) despite the sticky weather. Spotted sipping rose Champagne and taking the tiniest little bites of lobster: White House staffer Mona Sutphen, Biden communications director Courtney O’Donnell, deputy social secretary Sally Armbruster, CNN’s Michelle Jaconi, Fox Channel 5 anchor Will Thomas, Katie Rost, sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak, Amy Baier, Anais de Viel Castel, Paul Wharton, Annie Groer, and Mary Barth.

The Stylish Stars of Capitol Hill

The Stylish Stars of Capitol Hill

Paul and Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Photo by Kyle Samperton.

By Karin Tanabe

Now that the White House is inhabited by a very well-dressed first couple, is Capitol Hill following suit? Judging from our freshman congress, we have come a long way as far as chiseled features—Rep. Glenn Nye (D-VA), Rep. Aaron Schock (R-IL) (both single!) and Rep. Martin Heinrich (D-NM)—but what about debonair dressing? Have we have gone into decline, digging an Olympic size hole in the fashion well that reaches all the way to China? Or do we really have a legislative body full of Vogue, GQ and of course, Washington Life readers?

While Tom Ford is not yet camping out on the Capitol steps to scout his next muse, a handful of old guard politicians have been dressing well for decades and the new wave of freshmen is only upping the Hill style ante.

Congressman David Drier (R-CA), has been bringing style to the House since 1981. The sartorial chameleon has suits in grey, blue, black and even sand, so light in color they’re almost Gatsbyesque. Political power couple, Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-CA) and Rep. Connie Mack (R-FL), win points for shirking helmet hair and rows of safe navy blue suits, choosing to look like they’re style world is not confined by the Beltway.

FASHION FORWARD:
Created by the Style & Image Network, this year’s Fashion Fights Poverty event featured ethical and eco-friendly designs from Kayce Armstrong, Annatarian, Eric Finn, Mae Ho, and Adele Weschler. The event raised $10K for Nest — a group dedicated to providing micro-financing loans to women in developing countries to begin or maintain art- or craft- based businesses. WORKING IT: FFP gets better each year and is a great addition to the local fashion scene, but it ran a long and the quality of the fashion, although eco-friendly, was hit and miss. Highlights included Armstrong’s collection, Will Thomas doing a yeoman’s job of keeping co-host Parker Posey in check, and rocking hair and make-up direction by James Cornwell.
