Celebrating Omar’s 30th

Napoléon Bistro

Omar Popal

Omar Popal

THE EVENT: Omar Popal is smart, handsome, charming, a bit mischevious in good hearted way, and oh-so-discreet – just a few of the reasons why 300 of his best pals jammed Napoléon Bistro, his family’s Adams-Morgan eatery, to drink, dine, and dance in honor of the actor/model/restaurateur’s 30th. THE SCENE: The birthday boy watched good-naturedly as a lifetime’s worth of often embarrassing but always wittily encaptioned photos were put together and projected by big brother Mustafa Popal and sister Fatima Popal. Later, clan elders surrendered the premises to late-arriving scenesters who partied until closing in the lower level lounge/discothèque. THE GUESTS: Paul Wharton, Karim Chrobog, Routiza and Bita Vahhabaghai, Carolina Furukrona, Douglas Eldridge, Erwin Gomez, and Will Thomas.

WL EXCLUSIVE-Photos by Kyle Samperton

Operatic Home Run: Who says opera is only for the elite? Not the 19,000 freebie-ticket-holding fans who watched the opening night performance of The Barber of Seville being simulcast on Jumbotrons at Nationals Park (as $1,000-a-pop patrons settled in to their seats at the Kennedy Center). Double Header: Nationals owner and newly initiated opera buff Ted Lerner pronounced the famously comedic opera a success at the post-show dinner dance where guests marveled over the tour de force pantomimed ending of the first act and the wondrous “Cessa di più resistere” finale of lyric tenor Lawrence Brownlee.

Berlin Revisited: Twenty years after the fall of Berlin Wall and the reunification of East and West Germany, Wolf Trap’s annual black-tie ball honored all things Teutonic. Nearly 1,000 guests poured onto the vast Filene Center Stage (the second-largest performing arts space in North America), which was spectacularly transformed for the occasion with a “Freedom without Walls” theme that included a towering Brandenburg Gate. Gemütlichkeit: German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth served as honorary host and was toasted by co-chairmen Mary E. Arnold and James C. Nesbitt, who oversaw efforts that raised $970,000 for Wolf Trap’s renowned arts and education programs.

Why not fundraise in Newport, his favorite summer resort? CONNECTIONS COUNT: Success was assured when Bahnson’s pals Joe and Victoria Mele, agreed to host an event at their home, “Land’s End” (once owned by writer Edith Wharton) and Nuala Pell, whose late husband, Sen. FIESTA: The picture-perfect Linden grove behind the historic headquarters of the Meridian International Center was aglow with lights at the annual spring garden party to support the center’s international dialogue and public diplomacy initiatives. The theme was “An Evening in Yucatan,” and patrons sipped Casa Nobile tequila as they meandered between the garden and the mansion’s formal receiving rooms. BIG IDEAS: The evening’s honorary patrons were Mexican Ambassador Arturo Sarukhán and his wife Veronica Valencia. Sarukhán spoke eloquently about the recent, and by all accounts effective, cooperation between the United States and Mexico in response to the outbreak of swine flu. The event also provided an opportunity to honor James R. Jones, a former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico (1993-1997) and longtime chairman of the board of Meridian.

COLOR FUL CARA VAN: A mid-summer night filled with vibrant fashion and revelry for the W Hotel’s kick-off. Julia Chaplin added spice to the affair as she signed copies of her book, Gypset Style, about artists who live unconventional, jet-setting lives. Not surprisingly, colorful boho-chic outfits dotted the trendy space. Behind the bar, the W’s main mixologist Justin Guthrie whipped up refreshing specialty cocktails thanks to cosponsors Grey Goose (love the new Le Citron!) and Barcardi. In between designer drinks, gypsetters voted for the best local brownie to be placed in W’s new Bliss Spa (Bread and Chocolate’s won), while belly dancers shimmied through the room. RE VELERS : Anton Papich, Hadley Gamble, Amy Goldson, Austin Bryan, Ashtan Moore, Matt Lauer, Kristin Ricci, Ivan Iricanin, and Karim Chrobog.

EN POINTE: Royal Ballet dancers do know how to make an entrance — onstage, offstage, even when they’re prancing off a bus — and they surpassed expectations the night Sir Nigel and Lady Sheinwald hosted them on the eve of their Kennedy Center opening. DINING WITH DANCERS: The lithe stars have appetites equal to their intense workout regimes, so it was no surprise the buffet was even more popular than photo-ops in the lusciously green garden. A RAPT AUDIENCE: Lucky Roosevelt, John Irelan, Arnaud and Alexandra de Borchgrave, Didi Cutler, and Victor Shargai were among the guests chatting with company members, choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, and the ballet’s director, Dame Monica Mason.

HOME SWEET HOME: Since the UN Foundation Board of Directors’ annual meeting brought some of the world’s most influential philanthropic leaders to the District, it was only fitting that consummate Washington hosts Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn would offer a warm welcome to notable participants in their Georgetown home (where CNN founder Ted Turner livened up the crowd with a convivial “two bits for philanthropy” cheer). Chevy Chase, Teresa Heinz Kerry, Honoree Tom Lovejoy, and Jayni Chase

Chevy Chase, Teresa Heinz Kerry, Honoree Tom Lovejoy, and Jayni Chase

By Christina Wilkie

“It is nothing short of scandalous that we probably only know one out of every ten species on earth, let alone where they are.” Tom Lovejoy

Chevy Chase, Tom Brokaw, UN Foundation President Tim Wirth, John Kerry, Russel Train, and Teresa Heinz all took to the stage for an evening at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in honor of renowned conservationist Tom Lovejoy, the current president of the Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment. Lovejoy, who has been working in tropical rainforests since the 1960’s is credited with first using the now-standard terms ‘biological diversity’ and ‘conservation biology’. He also founded the popular PBS show Nature.

Billed as a roast, the heat on Dr. Lovejoy never rose much above ‘warm’, but dinner emcee Chevy Chase was spot-on, as was a charismatic and funny Tom Brokaw, who recalled a 1988 CODAL trip to Lovejoy’s Amazon base camp (known as Camp 41) with Ben Bradlee and then-Senators Al Gore, Richard Shelby, and the late Jack Heinz, among others. The more than 400 enviros and policy folks laughed for nearly an hour. In a nod to the guest of honor’s strong preference for bow-ties, a prize for the best tie of the evening was awarded to climatologist Warren Washington, who sported a blinking red variety.

The Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment is a nonpartisan, nonprofit institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy. The evening was primarily sponsored by Coca-Cola.

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO FORGET: The Alzheimer’s Association’s fifth annual gala was particularly memorable because of the candor of guests such as Sharon Percy Rockefeller, Maria Shriver, and Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens, who shared stories of the tragic decline of close family members. HONORING THOSE WHO REMEMBER: Awards were bestowed on four individuals who have served the cause: Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, former Sen. Bob Kerrey, and Dr. Jeffrey Cummings, an Alzheimer’s Disease treatment pioneer. The event raised over $6 million for research and critical care services.

“Africa is beautiful,” could be the calling card for this night that saw the board of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art (NMAfA) assemble at the home of gracious hosts Tim and Shigeko Bork to honor newly named director, Johnnetta Cole. Cole, whose speaking prowess and sheer dynamism was on full display during the intimate gathering of key friends and supporters of the NMAfA, is set to take over the museum with lofty goals.

“We want the [Museum of African Art] to be the best of the Smithsonian’s nineteen museums. And I’m not even counting the zoo,” Cole coolly commented as she stood and personally thanked each board member as well as those in attendance who have been so instrumental in the growth of the museum.

Washington D.C. representative Ellen Holmes Norton along with Ambassador HE Roble Olhaye, from the Republic of Djibouti, lead the list of esteemed attendees.

PRINT TO BIG SCREEN: The Week magazine treated the media elite to American cuisine and a movie trivia quiz led by Washington editor Margaret Carlson before a private showing of Bob Schieffer’s favorite film, Being There, at the Phillips Collection. The real treat of the night? Renaissance man Scheiffer warbling a few lines of a bluegrass song he wrote about a gas-station-attendant-turned-news anchor. The veteran news anchor told guests that his recent experience singing at the Grand Ole Opry, “was more nerve-racking than moderating the last presidential debate.”

A SPELLBINDER’S SPEECHES: Vernon Jordan confounded expectations when he vowed to become a lawyer after hearing Thurgood Marshall speak. Years later, the wheel came full circle when he spoke at Marshall’s funeral. Since his own career has featured many important speeches, it was only fitting that friends would celebrate their collection in Make It Plain: Standing Up and Speaking Out – especially since the author promised to sign a gratis copy for every guest. AN ADMIRING CROWD: Given the Jordans’ social cachet, it wasn’t surprising that the crowd invited by co-hosts David and Katherine Bradley and Jim Johnson and Maxine Isaacs was a notably diverse mix.

THE GUESTS: Tom and Margot Pritzker, cousin Senators Tom and Mark Udall, Justice Stephen Breyer, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, John and Diana Negroponte, Jim Wolfensohn, and the Ambassadors of Japan, Great Britain, Italy and Singapore.

WL EXCLUSIVE – Photos By Tony Powell

FINAL FIESTA: After four years, it’s hard to call the popular ambassador of the Dominican Republic and his wife anything but “Flavio” and “Minerva.” Most of us even say “DR” now! When the Espinals leave Washington in January, all their friends will want to tag along – not just for the warm weather, sunny beaches, and great golf, but because they are so much fun.

SIP AND PUFF: At least there was a chance to celebrate by sampling the country’s best-known exports one last time. Yes, it was cold in the garden, but warm welcomes and big smiles, rich Brugal rum and fat Procigars, and always, the luscious food of chef Altagracia Candelario, made it yet another party to remember. Adios, amigos!

DARLING DAUGHTER: The 10th anniversary celebration of the Elsie Whitlow Stokes Community Freedom Public Charter School would have passed unnoticed under most circumstances. Having Jenna Bush (a former third-grade teacher there) and Mayor Adrian M. Fenty as guests of honor guaranteed a hefty donor base plus a thank-you dinner hosted by Kuwaiti Ambassador Salem Al-Sabah and his wife, Rima, that attracted not only Ms. Bush’s mother, First Lady Laura Bush, but her new husband, Henry Hager, as well.

PROGRAM NOTES: A heartfelt tribute for the famously low-profile First Daughter by her slightly elder twin, Barbara Bush, and another for Mayor Fenty by D.C. Schools’ sizzlin’ Chancellor Michelle Rhee were followed by a performance by the Compassionates, White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten’s band, with Dede McClure and Meryl Chertoff providing vocal accompaniment.
