Style Profile: A soigné crowd celebrated the much-anticipated premiere of a documentary by R.J. Cutler that zeroes in on Vogue editor Anna Wintour as she and her impossibly hard-working staff put together the famed September 2007 issue, the largest in the magazine’s history. Of course, the screen style legends were nearly eclipsed by the evening’s very chic guests at the after-party hosted by the Gilt Group. Stylistas: Mary Barth, Lindsay Czarniak, Jessica Gibson, Omar Popal, and Ylan McClintock.

W’s Operatic Opening

W’s Operatic Opening

The W Hotel Washington and John Legend put on a grand opening performance, Pollywood style

Purple lights flooded the historic Beaux Arts exterior of the officially opened W Hotel Washington on a perfect fall evening. There was a formidable red carpet with a large logo-emboldened step-and-repeat with a special “VIP-only” entrance – for those worthy of being photographed in front of said corporate logos; photographers who waited patiently outside the velvet rope for the star power to roll in; and black-clad PR mavens with clipboards and headsets greeting guests with “Are you on the list?” Indeed, it was an event game-planned straight out of film screening/celebrity restaurant openings of Los Angeles and New York. But, this isn’t Los Angeles or New York. It’s Washington. Not to say Washington can’t be chic. It can be. But we don’t have to be Los Angeles or New York, or Miami for that matter. In fact, we revel in not being any of these cities because of how hard they try sometimes. If the opening of the W Hotel Washington proves anything, it’s that Washington is continuing to develop its unique Pollywood style – and that, is a good thing.

Berlin Revisited: Twenty years after the fall of Berlin Wall and the reunification of East and West Germany, Wolf Trap’s annual black-tie ball honored all things Teutonic. Nearly 1,000 guests poured onto the vast Filene Center Stage (the second-largest performing arts space in North America), which was spectacularly transformed for the occasion with a “Freedom without Walls” theme that included a towering Brandenburg Gate. Gemütlichkeit: German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth served as honorary host and was toasted by co-chairmen Mary E. Arnold and James C. Nesbitt, who oversaw efforts that raised $970,000 for Wolf Trap’s renowned arts and education programs.

Washington D.C. native, actor and activist Jeffrey Wright gathers the area’s African American power players to support Taia Peace Foundation and Maxwell

By Michael M. Clements

Maxwell

Maxwell

It wasn’t an ordinary Friday afternoon at downtown posh eatery Oya Restaurant (777 9th St NW) as Jeffrey Wright thought it was appropriate to show legendary performer Maxwell – in town playing at the Verizon center – D.C.’s VIP side. The room was filled some of the city’s top African American power players. Once again, behind the scenes hosts Tanya Lombard, Yelberton Watkins, Isaac Fordjour, and Chaka Burgess pulled together an impressive group. As always, there was a worthy cause involved – the Taia Peace Foundation (www.taiapeace.org.)

“The September Issue” After-Party at the W Hotel

Washington’s fashionistas get a slice of the Big Apple at the premiere of “The September Issue”

It may have been the doggiest of the dog days of August but that didn’t prevent local glitterati from turning out for the Washington premiere of “The September Issue” Wednesday night. ?

Invitation e-mails were sent only a few weeks ago for the much-anticipated event hosted by the online shopping website Gilt.com at the Landmark E Street Cinema, which was filled to capacity to see Vogue editrix-in-chief Anna Wintour in action as she forged the famed September 2007 issue of her magazine from scratch over a sixth month period. Why famed, you may ask? Answer: the 800-plus-page issue was the largest in Vogue’s history and the cause of much celebration in those pre-recessionary times. ??

Guests enjoyed the behind-the-scenes action as Wintour and her staff forge ahead to final deadline, arguing over photo spreads, dismissing carloads of expensive designer duds as “simply not for us,” tossing out $50,000 fashion shoots, and making snide comments behind each other’s backs. Much to everyone’s surprise, the real star of the show wasn’t Wintour at all, but the magazine’s longtime creative director, Grace Coddington, a fabulously frowsy redhead in her late 60s who couldn’t care less how she looks in a mirror or anywhere else. The flamboyant Andre Leon Talley also captures a few scenes, all of which he plays for laughs. My personal favorite: the obese Talley futilely trying to lose weight on a tennis court as a hunky instructor lobs balls his way. Biggest surprise: the total non-role played by European Editor-at-Large Hamish Bowles, who never gets a single word on camera.??

The W Hotel is Washington’s new oasis of chic, and the 200 or so guests who showed up for the post-screening party must be commenced for their effort to replicate the height of New York chic (mile-high heels, short skin-tight dresses) despite the sticky weather. Spotted sipping rose Champagne and taking the tiniest little bites of lobster: White House staffer Mona Sutphen, Biden communications director Courtney O’Donnell, deputy social secretary Sally Armbruster, CNN’s Michelle Jaconi, Fox Channel 5 anchor Will Thomas, Katie Rost, sports reporter Lindsay Czarniak, Amy Baier, Anais de Viel Castel, Paul Wharton, Annie Groer, and Mary Barth.

All Your Best ‘Mortal Friends’

All Your Best ‘Mortal Friends’

Author Jane Stanton Hitchcock’s latest novel is the talk of the town, whether you’re in it or not.

By Kevin Chaffee

Author Jane Stanton Hitchcock at home

Author Jane Stanton Hitchcock at home

What do Jim Kimsey, Ben Bradlee, Sally Quinn, Carolyn Peachey, Liz Stevens, Amanda Downes, Jim Johnson, Deborah Gore Dean, Rima Al-Sabah, Ann Jordan, Carol Joynt, Leo and Grega Daly, and Rep. Jane Harmon have in common? – apart from living in Washington, that is.

Yes, all were spotted at the party celebrating Jane Stanton Hitchcock’s recent novel, “Mortal Friends,” at Café Milano on Thursday night, but there is a far deeper connection. It turns out that each is a character in her book – but under a totally different name, of course.

Anyone who really knows the Washington scene won’t have too much trouble deciphering that “Nouria Salaha,” described as the ultra-fashionable spouse of a Middle Eastern ambassador, is based on top diplomatic hostess Rima Al-Sabah, wife of Kuwaiti Ambassador Salem Al-Sabah. Or that “Bob Poll,” an “ageless rake with military bearing” sure seems a lot like AOL co-founder Jim Kimsey, who, if he minded any of the comparisons, was shrugging them off that night (as he did during Joynt’s sold-out “Q&A” lunch with Hitchcock at Nathan’s earlier that day).

“Mortal Friends” is sure to be this summer’s essential plane or beach read. It’s a delicious thriller filled with social climbing, back-stabbing, deceit, betrayal, and the hunt for a serial killer who carries out his terrible deeds in such familiar haunts as Georgetown’s Montrose Park. No wonder Politics and Prose sold out every copy – the first time that has ever happened at a book party, according to a member of the sales staff.

Guests sipped wine and Champagne while waiting patiently in line for author inscriptions. It wasn’t long before the crowd spilled out into the reception area, and from there to patio where Jill Biden, the wife of the vice president, had quietly entered to dine with a friend (even she ended up getting a book.)

mortalfriends-hc-c

Jane Stanton Hitchcock's latest novel "Mortal Friends" explore dangerous liaisons in Washington social life.

Here’s who else was there:

From the diplomatic corps: German Ambassador Klaus Sharioth, Yemeni Ambassador Abdulwahab Al-Hajjri, Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki and Yoriko Fujisaki, and Lady (Julia) Sheinwald, wife of British Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald.

From the media: Jim Hoagland (Hitchcock’s spouse), Bob Schieffer, Arnaud de Borchgrave, Tammy Haddad, Andrea Mitchell, Margaret Carlson, Edie Emery, Jim Lehrer, David Corn, Ann Geracimos, Roxanne Roberts, Fred Hiatt, Patrick Gavin, Steve Smith and Sally Bedell Smith.

From the social scene: Andy Athy, Michael and Afsaneh Beschloss, Dr. Susan Blumenthal, Conrad and Ludmila Cafritz, Buffy Cafritz, Marcia Carter, John Cecchi, Walter and Didi Cutler, Count Renaud de Viel Castel, Susan Eisenhower, Nini Ferguson, Bitsey Folger, Jim and Ann Free, Ina Ginsburg, Lloyd and Ann Hand, June Hechinger, Chris and Jennifer Isham, Winston Bao Lord, Capricia Marshall, Mac and Donna McLarty, Bill and Dorothy McSweeny, John and Diana Negroponte, Mike Peabody, Gerald and Eden Rafshoon, Lucky Roosevelt, Jackie Rush, Aniko Gaal Schott, Prince Ermias Selassie, Jamal Simmons, and Judith Terra.

“SPRING FORWARD”: “Deconstructionist elegance” reigned at this year’s gala co-chaired by Mary Haft and designer Darryl Carter, whose ultra-modern-but-oh-so-economical setting featured iron candelabras (instead of flowers), classic white Panton chairs, and architectural scaffolding covered in translucent cloth to silhouette lithe young company members’ graceful poses. DINNER AND A SHOW: Cocktails, a sensual performance by dancers Jared Nelson and Sona Kharatian, politically correct food  (“sustainable” seafood Newburg and chicken –surely free-range), mercifully brief speeches, and dancing to the sounds of Free Spirit. WHO WAS THERE: Ballet director Septime Webre (celebrating 10 years at the helm), and major benefactors Arturo and Hilda Brillembourg and Raul and Jean-Marie Fernandez.

WONDER WOMEN: This year’s gala celebrated women in the arts with an all-star A-list that included First Lady Michelle Obama (who made a surprise appearance), Vera Wang, Annie Leibovitz, Patti LaBelle, K.D. Lang, Midori, Chita Rivera, and, yes, Paris Hilton. Michael Kaiser had a hard act to follow after last year’s salute to conductor John Williams, but this year’s women, especially conductor JoAnn Falletta (who masterfully commanded the National Symphony Orchestra) made last year a distant memory. The gala was once again an elegant kick-off to the Spring Gala season. NOTABLES: Jenn Colella, Julia Murney, LeAnn Rimes, Amb. Prince Zeid, Amb. and Rima Al-Sabah, Steven and Christine Hearst Schwarzman, Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, Gwen Iffel, Tammy Haddad, Christopher Lu, and Lisa Brown.

AN EASTERN ODYSSEY: To celebrate its historic collaboration with the Moscow Kremlin Museums, the Freer and Sackler galleries welcomed patrons to a night of opulence in the spirit of imperial Russia. The spring benefit gala celebrated the opening of the exhibition “The Tsars and the East: Gifts from Turkey and Iran in The Moscow Kremlin.” Guests in Eastern-inspired gowns and accessories viewed the exhibition – which included bejeweled Russian ecclesiastical treasures, Turkish dishes, and Iranian daggers from the 17th century – before it opened to the public. John, Cindy, and Roberta McCain toured the exhibit with a guide, posing for pictures and marveling at an intricate gold bridle and saddle, before joining guests for a dinner of classic Russian specialties in the Freer’s marble halls. TSARS OF THE NIGHT: Director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums Elena Gagarina, President of Lukoil Vagit Alekperov, Sergio Millian, Singaporean Amb. MIRACLE WORK
: More than 500 donors to the Children’s National Medical Center gathered for a dinner of steak and skate, a live auction, and dancing to the cult-favorite Neil Diamond cover band, Super Diamond – all in support of this world-renowned Washington-based pediatric research hospital. LIVING PROOF: During dinner, ball co-chairman and FOX News White House correspondent Bret Baier shared the story of his son, who was born in 2007 with a potentially fatal heart defect, and has had two major surgeries at the hospital in the past two years. Baier then video-conferenced the healthy, energetic two year-old onto the stage, and Paul Baier waved to guests before asking his father about a toy train. Title sponsorship was provided for the ninth year in a row by Washington Area Lexus Dealers. IN THE CROWD: Some of the city’s most engaging young philanthropists (many of whom are parents of young children), including Elissa and Tom Davidson, Sarah and David Steinberg, Jen and Scott Frederick, and Liz and Dave Roberts.

By Christina Wilkie

“It is nothing short of scandalous that we probably only know one out of every ten species on earth, let alone where they are.” Tom Lovejoy

Chevy Chase, Tom Brokaw, UN Foundation President Tim Wirth, John Kerry, Russel Train, and Teresa Heinz all took to the stage for an evening at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in honor of renowned conservationist Tom Lovejoy, the current president of the Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment. Lovejoy, who has been working in tropical rainforests since the 1960’s is credited with first using the now-standard terms ‘biological diversity’ and ‘conservation biology’. He also founded the popular PBS show Nature.

Billed as a roast, the heat on Dr. Lovejoy never rose much above ‘warm’, but dinner emcee Chevy Chase was spot-on, as was a charismatic and funny Tom Brokaw, who recalled a 1988 CODAL trip to Lovejoy’s Amazon base camp (known as Camp 41) with Ben Bradlee and then-Senators Al Gore, Richard Shelby, and the late Jack Heinz, among others. The more than 400 enviros and policy folks laughed for nearly an hour. In a nod to the guest of honor’s strong preference for bow-ties, a prize for the best tie of the evening was awarded to climatologist Warren Washington, who sported a blinking red variety.

The Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment is a nonpartisan, nonprofit institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy. The evening was primarily sponsored by Coca-Cola.

The floral arrangements might have been smaller and the grandiose decor designed to be not so grandiose, but, still, as the saying goes, it’s what’s on the inside that makes the outside beautiful. With femme forces such as First Lady Michelle Obama (who made a surprise appearance), Patti LaBelle, K.D. Lang, Annie Leibovitz, Midori, Chita Rivera, and, yes, Paris Hilton, the Kennedy Center was a beautiful place to be Sunday night.

Michael Kaiser had a hard act to follow after last year’s salute to conductor John Williams, which brought out Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorcese, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. But, this year’s women, especially conductor JoAnn Falletta (who masterfully command of the National Symphony Orchestra) made 2008 a distant memory.

No bouzouki players or Zorba dancers were featured although popular Greek dance music was heard throughout the night. A SPARTAN AFFAIR: Veggie cornucopias (later donated to the D.C. Central Kitchen) replaced floral arrangements; ticket prices were halved to $500. WHO WAS THERE: Moroccan Amb. Aziz Mekouar and his wife, Maria Selice, Judith Terra, Phillip and Nina Pillsbury, Toni Gore, Carter and Amanda Hood, Edward and Marnelle Bruce, and auctioneer Conrad Burns.

The 2008 Best Buddies Ball

Location: The Sargent and Eunice Shriver Residence, Potomac, Md.

WL SPONSORED EVENT – Photos By Kyle Samperton

THE BUDDY SYSTEM: The Best Buddies Ball at Sarge and Eunice Shriver’s home featured the usual over-the-top hoopla: a circus-sized tent, big buck auction items, and major talent (Cirque du Soleil acrobats and saxophonist Kenny G) performing for a sold-out crowd of 900 guests. The arrival of Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, wife of the emir of Quatar, added to the mystique (along with the oil rich state’s seven-figure contribution), although the Hollywood power factor was somewhat diluted by Robert De Niro’s embarrassing attempt to publicly cheek smooch the Muslim royal consort after presenting her with an award.

FOND FAREWELL: Best Buddies founder Anthony Shriver announced the ball’s demise after two decades with a fond tribute to his ailing parents, who recently put their estate on the market for $11.8 million.

The Jamaican women of Washington unite to prevent obesity

By Michelle Fenty

Photos by Tony Powell

Location: The Four Seasons Hotel
Adrian and I were honored once again this year to serve as honorary co-chairs of the sixth annual Jamaican Women of Washington, Inc. (JWoW) Tea-Off to Good Health. JWoW is a charitable organization that raises funds to improve the health and well-being of underserved women and children in Jamaica and Washington, D.C.
My family roots can be found in both the District and Jamaica, and as a board member of JWoW, I am grateful to have the opportunity to make a significant impact on important health and social issues in both regions. This year’s theme, “Obesity Prevention: Promoting Wellness and Healthy Lifestyles,” is a relevant one, because obesity has reached endemic proportions in the District and in many other parts of the world, including Jamaica. Of particular concern to us is the impact the epidemic is having on women and children in both regions. Led by its founder, Dr. Jacqui Watson, president of Health Concepts International, JWoW has raised over $500,000 since its inception, and donated to several deserving organizations in Washington and Jamaica.
My husband, Mayor Adrian Fenty, recognizes that obesity is a critical public health issue and his administration is working tirelessly to effectively address it on a number of levels. Adrian holds himself to high personal fitness standards and serves as an excellent role model for Washingtonians, but all of us need to become personally involved and take the necessary steps to live healthier lifestyles.
