The Kennedy Center Annual Celebration of American Humor
A Local "Laugh-In"

The star-studded second annual Mark Twain Prize Awards marked the highlight of a month-long “Celebrationof American Humor” at the Kennedy Center, which offered comedic performances, films, and roundtablediscussions open to the public. The Prize recognizes those individuals who, like Twain himself, createhumor from their own unique American experiences. This year’s award honored improv master and giftedcharacter creator Jonathan Winters, who was presented with a copy of an 1884 bronze bust of Mark Twain,sculpted by Karl Gerhardt. Washington rolled out its red carpet to welcome a number of celebrities whocame to show their support. Guests included: Steve Allen, Richard Belzer, Sid Caesar, Mark Curry, AndyDick, Dave Foley, Bonnie Hunt, Eugene Levy, Lyle Lovett, Robin Williams, and Robert Wuhl. The eveningraised money for the Kennedy Center’s Education Department, which in turn will apportion the money in theform of grants to nurture the talents of young American humorists.
