| The Field Was Jumpin’ It was an afternoon of Olympic-level horse competition (with a $100,000 prize), wine tasting andpeople-watching in the Virginia countryside at the second annual Great Meadow Grand Prix onSeptember 8. The Blue Ridge Wine Way Wine Festival featured tastings from the latest harvestof eight local Virginia vineyards and the horse jumping competition, with a course of 15-20specially designed fences, attracted riders from across the U.S. and Canada, including last year’swinner and local favorite Kim Frey. Riders had been invited to compete based upon theirstandings in the USET (United States Equestrian Team) national computer rankings as of July 5 and theirpast performance in top level Grand Prix. This year’s winner, Aaron Vale, placed 33rd in therankings. Sponsors of the event included Citigroup, Cadillac, Marriott, Pepsi Cola, and NantucketNectars. Proceeds will benefit the Great Meadows Outdoors Foundation.
