First, there was the music. A 90-minute Christmas concert at the KennedyCenter Concert Hall featured the music of Belgium (in honor of the evening’spatrons Ambassador Alex Reyn and his wife Rita), the traditions of Hawaii, theCaribbean, Israel (for Hanukkah), and other nations. At the dinner-dance galaat the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel which followed, festive holiday greensdecked the halls, walls, and pillars, and lovely candlelit floral centerpieces gracedthe dinner tables (all by Greenworks). There were also twinkling Christmastrees and red rose bouquets (for the current and former event chairs). At thesilent auction chaired by Mary Jane Thistlethwaite, a cruise of the GalapagosIslands went for $5250, a Mediterranean adventure for $3750, and a guitarsigned by Britney Spears fetched $725. Other featured items: a weekend trip toParis; a baseball signed by President George W. Bush; a walk-on role on“Providence;” and a chance to visit the set of “The West Wing.” The auctionnetted approximately $95,000; the event grossed over $600,000.
