Arias and Accolades

Italian Ambassador Ferdinando Salleo and his wife Anna Maria hosted an evening fundraiser by theInternational Brain Injury Association (IBIA) in late March at the Embassy. The celebration was aprecursor to the Fourth World Congress on Brain Injury which took place in Turin, Italy on May5–9, 2001. The Congressional Brain Injury Caucus was announced and former President Bill Clintonwas presented with the 2001 IBIA Public Policy Leadership Award by the chairman of the board ofgovernors, Martin B. Foli, Jr.. Film and music star Gary Busey, a leading advocate for those who havesuffered traumatic brain injuries, appeared with President Clinton. After a buffet reception and performancesby Jay Coupe and Cristina Fernandez, the Washington Opera performed Italian arias. TheIBIA is a multidisciplinary society devoted to the advancement of the science of brain injury preventionand treatment. They also take an active role in policy development and international public policyinitiatives.
