International Red Cross Ball in Palm Beach

Palm Beach's 45th annual International Red Cross Ball at the Breakers Hotel on January 29th was rich inpomp and circumstance of a sort that is rarely seen anywhere else in this country. Chairwoman BettyScripps Harvey is to be congratulated that the coffers of the Red Cross were increased by one milliondollars in net profit, thanks in large part to her own contributions and those of corporate sponsors. That evening she was resplendent in an all-white Scaasi ball gown, a Van Cleef and Arpels tiara, and herown diamond necklace and earrings.

Fabulously gowned and bejeweled ladies, escorted by gentlemen in diplomatic decorations, passed down thehotel’s long hall toward the grand ballroom to the sound of trumpeting heralds.

The Ambassadors of Brazil, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Iceland, Hungary, Portugal, and Korea receivedguests in the Gold Room before they and their wives were escorted by uniformed Marines across theballroom to their tables. The decor was all white in the ballroom, and the tables centered with toweringwhite bouquets of orchids, tulips, and Casablanca lilies.

Guests included: Colonel Robert Spencer, Candy Van Alen of Newport, Mrs. John R. “Brownie” McLean,Martha Reed, Dolly Corbin Stone, Ambassador True Davis, Ambassador Enriquillo del Rosario and wifeAudrey, Patricia Supper, General Alexander and Patricia Haig, and Stephania and Donald Conrad.
