Black & White Friend Raiser

Please join Signature Kitchen, Bath & Closets and Friends for an informational friend-raising evening to learn more about the work of Adventist Behavioral Heath, the leading treatment center in the greater D.C. region for children with mental health disorders. Our hope is that each guest will leave with a heightened awareness of this pressing issue and a willingness to promote philanthropic support for education, research, and treatment. Ensuring that our children are healthy in mind as well as body is crucial to producing healthy adults and a healthy future for our society.

Did you know that?

- Nearly 50% of students with a mental disorder age 14 and older drop out of high school – the highest dropout rate for any disability group (U.S. Department of Education, 2001).

- Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in the 15-24 age group (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2001).

- 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14; 75% by age 24 (National Institute of Mental Health, 2005).

In February 2009, the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine took a bold stand: “The federal government should make preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders and promoting mental health in young people a national priority. These disorders . . . are about as common as fractured limbs in children and adolescents . . . they take a tremendous toll on the well-being of young people and their families, costing the U.S. an estimated $247 billion annually.”

Unfortunately, in spite of the magnitude of this problem, treatment is not timely. At the present time, as a result of both the stigma of mental illness and limited access to care, the average delay between diagnosis and treatment is seven years. Let’s do something about it – first step is to join us on October 14th!

“It does not have to be expensive to look beautiful!”
